Why...

you may ask do I ride my bike on a day when the temperature barely climbs to 43 degrees? Why ride 16 miles through wind that cuts to your core? Why where two pair of socks, bike shorts, bike tights, base layer, jersey, insulated jacket, windproof shell, full-finger gloves and 1/2 finger gloves? Why bother on a day like today?

I ask why not??? :)

More Riding

Yesterday was another great day for riding! I did my valley loop down into the valley and back out. My blood sugar dropped like a rock in the middle so i had to stop and eat some food and readjust my basal rate percentage to make sure I didn't pass out in front of one of the cars that pass almost too close for comfort. My sugar was 52 when I checked but after refueling I finished with a blood sugar of 102. I just need to work on fueling as I ride since I apparently burn food off like it's my job.

Here are some fun pics from the ride:

Skiing anyone??? There's still a little snow at Boston Mills!

I passed about 10 feet or less away from the deer and they didn't even flinch!

Mud

I was finally able to get out in the mud and ride. I figured it would be muddy but at Quail Hollow it was downright soupy! Either way I broke the bike in and got her dirty. It was a great ride and I was glad to be back in the off-road world again.

Here's the trail:

And another one

Great day yesterday, a little on the chilly side but manageable. Took the road bike out to make sure I put everything back together correctly after my overhaul from the winter.

142 starting BG
dropped basal rate to 55%
ate 30g of carbs, roughly
rode 15.4 miles
finish BG 75

Lesson learned, need to work on refueling on the bike.

12

That's the number of miles I rode in 50 minutes on the new MTB! It was a beautiful day and I couldn't miss it. It felt good to get out and about! By next week it will be light an hour later so I'll be good to go for longer stretches! Hope everyone else was able to enjoy the weather as well!

Starting BG: 105
Carbs before ride: 45
Ride: 50 minutes
Ending BG: 100

And here we go

Yesss!!! I finally got my first ride in on the new MTB! Even if it was short. The wind was wicked even though it said 35 degrees out once you got moving it was crazy cold. My face hurt and I was worried that my insulin pump would freeze. I rode probably only 5 miles but tried putting the bike through some off-road conditions.

On a side note I think I will have to totally readjust my insulin pump to handle riding again. After a massive snack and dropping my basal rate to 60% my blood sugar was still only 85. That just means I'll have to get out more and try some different routines while ridging. :)

Here's a picture of the inaugural ride (thanks Molly!) Two pair of socks, shorts, tights, and three layers up high and this is what you look like:

Schedule

Ok, so after multiple revisions I have finalized my tentative race schedule for the summer. Take a look and let me know what you think. I tried to give myself a few weeks of training leading up to the 12 hour race, we'll see if it helps!!!
